A SOLID FOUNDATION | BY JONATHAN DAVIS

It’s appropriate that career and technology centers take pride in building the future through the students we educate. Whether they choose to continue their education at a post-secondary institution, enter the workforce or join the military, with the foundation they get from a career-technical education they are prepared for anything.

In the 2021-22 school year, we prepared nearly 300 seniors for their next step, with 175 of them employed in full-time jobs before the school year ended. Our students worked 89,000 hours, earning $1.2 million. In addition, 14 juniors were offered jobs during the summer before their senior year.

Many 2022 seniors chose to continue their education through post-secondary institutions at an all-time high rate, being accepted at colleges throughout Ohio and Pickaway-Ross Adult Education.

And several students chose to enlist in the military, eager to serve our country.

While in school, students were also serving the community. Each year, juniors and seniors work together to continue work at the Veterans Healing Garden at the Chillicothe VA. For the 2021-22 school year, Pickaway-Ross won first place in Ohio in SkillsUSA’s Community Service Project competition for this work by our students. Students also volunteered with the Good Samaritan Food Bank, Ross County Humane Society, Ross County Park District, and continued interviewing veterans for English teacher Tea McCaulla’s Veterans History Project that were then presented to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Students also achieved success in a number of areas through Adult Education.

Game Plan served 90 youth, partnering with county agencies to connect them with services that provided them with education, training and employment.

Ninety percent of Adult Education’s training programs are on Ohio’s Top Jobs list.

By career pathway, nearly 150 students entered health care; 100 students entered the trades; and 75 pursued public safety.

Other accomplishments include approval by the state board of nursing to offer Registered Nursing and hosted its first live burn training session. Five classes used the burn building for their live burn practical and one stakeholder used it for live fire training four times.

Adult Education has an 86 percent student completion rate with alumni being employed at a variety of businesses, including Accurate Heating and Cooling, Adena Health System, American Electric Power, Children’s Hospital, Dayton Power & Light, DisTran Steel, Holzer Health System, IBEW Iron Workers Local 172, Ohio Health, Sofidel, South Central Power and YSK Corp.

Our Secondary and Adult Education staff members do a phenomenal job laying the foundation for our students to succeed at every stage of their education to prepare them for a successful future.
